Cleared by the FDA for use as an aid in the diagnosis of dental decay. This device functions on the principle of laser-induced fluorescence. The device detects bacterial byproducts associated with dental decay, which fluoresce in response to a specific wavelength of light generated by a diode laser. Using two-way optics, laser fluorescence emitted from tooth structure is simultaneously quantified and expressed as a numeric value which appears on the display. An audible tone increases in pitch proportional to scale values to alert the operator while the device records peak values obtained. Caries activity/progression can be monitored by comparing changes in scale values over time.
